The members of the Sumter Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. join the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Rose H. Wilder in celebrating her life and legacy. Dr. Rose H. Wilder was born on November 4, 1955 and transitioned on August 30, 2022. Our sincerest thoughts and prayers are with all who loved her.
Dr. Wilder is known as a “legend in education.” In 1994, she became the first Black female superintendent in South Carolina since Reconstruction. She served as superintendent in the following school districts: Clarendon 2, Clarendon 1, Fairfield, and Williamsburg. She earned the distinction of an Outstanding Superintendent by the SC School Boards Association in 1994 and was named SC Superintendent of the Year during the 2013-2014 school year. Dr. Wilder had a profound effect on her colleagues as well as the students and the communities she served.
Dr. Wilder also served on the Manning City Council and she was an active member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. Wilder availed herself to every opportunity to improve the lives of others. Her service was not limited to education.
Soror Wilder was a devoted member of the Sumter Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was initiated in the Denmark Alumnae Chapter in April 1987. Soror Wilder served on several committees, served as a mentor to many sorors, and provided resources in her areas of expertise. She was honored during Sumter Alumnae's May Week. She was also a guest speaker for the R.O.S.E.S Girls Conference in which 75+ young ladies thoroughly enjoyed her presentation.
Soror Wilder exemplified a “servants heart” as identified in the following verses:
Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18
In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35
Soror Wilder, a life well lived. Well done thy good and faithful servant.
